KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The team at Terrain Wellness looks at lifestyle choices like buckets when it comes to cancer prevention.
“Those are different areas of our lives that maybe could lead towards cancer if those buckets overflow,” said Kelsey Galyon, health restoration practitioner at Terrain Wellness. Galyon and her husband, Dr. Ebi Erdene, own the holistic wellness office.
Between 30 to 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable, according to the World Health Organization. Terrain Wellness helps patients make healthy lifestyle changes and reduce exposure to cancer risk factors.
“Different things that we put in our mouth and we eat, the things we put on our bodies, the things that we surround ourselves and our environment,” Galyon said.
American Cancer Society reports that everyone is at risk for developing cancer, but the likelihood increases with certain behaviors like drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating an unhealthy diet. The organization also says about 40 percent of men and women in the United States will develop cancer in their lifetime.
Galyon said she wishes more people knew that prevention can be possible.
“There are things we do today that prevent it from happening,” Galyon said. “I wish more people would do the prevention. I think sometimes it takes getting in that diagnosis to think I need to make a change.”
American Cancer Society reports that fewer people are dying from cancer, but cases are on the rise. The organization expects a record high of two million new cases of cancer in the US this year.
Galyon said dietary and lifestyle changes can help prevent other chronic diseases and illnesses besides cancer. She said they had helped multiple patients manage diabetes.
The wellness group also helps patients who have already been diagnosed with cancer. Galyon said this can help patients have better outcomes with treatment and feel fewer side effects.
